ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” kicks off its unprecedented 20th season, filled with its signature high-drama twists.

Following last year’s strikes, the season features only 10 episodes, a departure from the usual 20. Fans, having watched all 420 episodes multiple times, embrace the change.

“It does allow you to tell a couple of different stories that maybe you wouldn’t be able to tell in a 20-or-plus season,” says executive producer Meg Marinis. “Things are a lot more immediate.”

Nick steps down as residency director, making way for Miranda Bailey’s return to the role. The season premiere echoes the series’ pilot episode, with Bailey’s iconic declaration: “I have five rules…” Longtime fans experience a nostalgic thrill as “Grey’s Anatomy” returns to its roots, evoking memories of its earliest days.

“Bailey is not going to make it easy for those interns,” Marinis teases. She’s worked on the show since Season 3, and promises more Easter eggs throughout the season.

The theme of the season? Back to basics, after some heavy moments in the characters’ lives: a near-death experience, a non-wedding and a near-alcoholism relapse, for starters.

“So much happened in the finale that it’s going to take awhile to unpack it all,” Marinis says.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 20: What’s Next?

Though fewer episodes may disappoint some, Marinis highlights how the writing staff utilized their skills effectively.

“We’ve never gotten this opportunity to do it that way,” she adds. “Season 1 was short, but that was because it was a new series.

Since then, we’ve always had these really long seasons. We took the opportunity to tell a couple stories differently, which may not have worked over more than 10 episodes.”

Fans can anticipate Meredith’s return for three more episodes, showcasing Ellen Pompeo’s continued dedication to the show, much to the gratitude of the team.

Similarly, Nick’s chemistry with Meredith adds depth to the narrative, providing a compelling dynamic for the character.

While the interns bring their charm, the presence of the titular “Grey” character is essential for the show’s cohesion.

Fans can except the return of beloved characters like Arizona Robbins, whose serendipitous storyline from Season 14 promises intrigue. Additionally, Nico Kim’s reunion with ex Levi promises emotional depth and character development.
