Nikki Haley Takes Aim at ‘Grumpy Old Men’ in GOP Race

Fighting for traction in the Republican presidential race, Nikki Haley has initiated a strategic effort portraying Donald Trump and Joe Biden as “Grumpy Old Men” past their prime. This approach aims to tap into voter disinterest in a 2020 rematch, with Haley raising doubts about both candidates’ mental acuity, campaign vigor, and spending habits through digital ads and mailers.

Haley, 52, has emphasized age and mental fitness, advocating competency tests for politicians over 75. Her critique gains significance as Biden, 81, and Trump, 77, dominate the field. The new attack campaign, named after a 1993 comedy, targets the perceived chaos and confusion caused by both candidates.

With the 2024 rematch drawing apathy, a Reuters/Ipsos poll indicates 67% of respondents desire new faces in presidential elections. Concerns about Biden and Trump’s fitness for the job are prominent, with 75% saying Biden is too old for government work, and half expressing the same about Trump.

Haley, who faced an 11-point loss to Trump in the New Hampshire primary, will send mailers to voters in South Carolina for the Feb. 24 primary. While Trump is favored, Haley’s emphasis on generational change resonates with those seeking alternatives.
